A frenum is a muscle attachment such as the one between your child’s upper or lower lip and the gums. There is another frenum attaching the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
When the frenum under your child’s tongue is too restrictive, this condition is referred to as
tongue-tie. When the frenum between one of your child’s lips and the gum is too restrictive, it is referred to as
lip-tie.
When the frenum is restrictive, your child can experience oral issues including:
- Inability to nurse normally (infants)
- Difficulty talking
- Difficulty swallowing or eating normally
- Picky eating, preferring foods that are easier to eat
- Gum recession
- Gaps developing between the front teeth
A Laser for Fast Healing
Your child’s frenum may be too large, too tight, or positioned in such a way that it restricts normal movement of the tissue on either side. The solution is a frenectomy, the surgical removal of a frenum. When performing this procedure in our office, we employ a laser in order to provide the least amount of discomfort or bleeding and the fastest healing for your child.
During this procedure,
Dr. Bristol-Mártir will ensure that your child receives the proper numbing agent so he or she is as comfortable as possible. Laser treatment seals the area of the frenum that is cut so stitches are not usually required. Your child may experience some swelling after the procedure, but it should subside after 24 hours.
Once the frenectomy is done, your child should have an easier time eating or talking. Nursing babies have an easier time latching.
