Space Maintainers for Kids in Vineland, NJ

What is a space maintainer? It’s a special device used to preserve the correct position of your child’s teeth if a baby tooth is lost too early or if there is a congenitally missing tooth.

When your child is missing a baby tooth, the teeth on either side of the gap will begin to shift into that empty space. The permanent tooth that is destined for that empty space may be unable to erupt normally.

When a space maintainer is placed, your child’s baby teeth or permanent teeth are held in their ideal positions, preventing future impacted or misaligned teeth.

The Treatment

Space maintainers vary in structure based on the issues they correct. By carefully evaluating your child’s oral imaging and the shape of the jaws, Dr. Bristol-Mártir can create the right space maintainer to hold everything in place as your child’s facial bones and teeth develop. Once the permanent teeth have erupted into their proper places, this appliance can be removed.

If teeth are lost due to decay or trauma or are simply missing, a space maintainer is an important method of preventing future alignment problems for your child. Please consult Dr. Bristol-Mártir if your child has prematurely lost any baby teeth.
