Tooth Extractions for Kids in Vineland, NJ

Dr. Bristol-Mártir will only recommend an extraction for your child if it is completely necessary. In every case where it is possible, she will attempt to save the tooth or teeth.

When a tooth extraction is the only choice, it is usually because of one of these reasons:

  • A tooth was badly damaged in a fall or impact injury
  • A tooth was deeply damaged by decay
  • Advanced gum disease has caused your child’s tooth to become non-viable
  • Teeth must be removed to allow orthodontic care to succeed

Simple Tooth Extractions and Complicated Tooth Extractions

If your child needs an extraction for a baby tooth, this is usually a simpler extraction than most because these teeth are naturally temporary. A wisdom tooth extraction, by contrast, can be more complicated.

A larger tooth or one with a crooked root may need to be cut into pieces to remove it without damaging surrounding teeth or tissues. This process is called
sectioning. After the tooth is cut, each piece is removed separately.

No matter what kind of extraction is to be done, Dr. Bristol-Mártir takes great care to administer the correct anesthetic to keep your child as comfortable as possible. She also maintains a calm and reassuring manner around your child to make the experience a positive one.

After a Tooth Extraction

After you leave our office, be sure to only feed your child liquids or soft foods until the anesthetic has fully worn off. This prevents him or her from accidentally biting their tongue or lip.

When your child returns home, it is wise to have a cold pack or unopened bag of frozen peas or corn ready to reduce swelling and pain. Your child must be monitored carefully to ensure they do not suck on a straw, brush the area of the extraction or rinse vigorously for 72 hours. These activities can dislodge the blood clot which forms as a natural part of the healing process and also cause more bleeding.

Within a few days, your child’s normal activities can be resumed.

After every extraction, Dr. Bristol-Mártir will provide you with a full set of instructions to assist your child’s rapid and complete healing. We follow the same protocols and procedures for child extractions as we do adult extractions, however, healing times for your child may differ.
